Healthcare Advocacy Consultant
I was a Registered Nurse for 35 years, with not only NICU and Post Partum experience, but also a variety of nursing areas. During my nursing career I became disillusioned with our present healthcare system. I felt I could no longer work in a healthcare system that didn't address more than the physical body - that the mind & soul were just as important. I felt I needed to leave nursing, and develop a more holistic approach, something lacking in our present healthcare system.
Initially I felt called to help expectant & new parents navigate the often scary new parenting terrain, with teaching them to trust their gut and believe they are more than capable to parent their little one, but this vision has now shifted towards becoming a “Healthcare Advocate” for those who can’t effectively help themselves. In my experience, the elderly and those with special needs are often at risk, along with expectant & new parents.

There is more to Sandra than being a retired RN. Having an adult son with special needs has provided her a different perspective on Motherhood. This gives her the expertise, empathy and compassion to work with parents of this population. Sandra also has a daughter, who has a successful career in Healthcare, working as a Social Worker. Sandra is married to her second husband Larry, who also has an adult son, Jarod.
Sandra loves horseback riding and during her teen years she trained horses and took customers on riding trails during the summer months, in British Columbia. Although she hadn't played the piano since her childhood, in 2019 Sandra decided to start attending weekly piano lessons. She thinks she is getting pretty talented, and has also started singing, while playing the piano (not an easy feat).
My journey spans 35 years as a Registered Nurse, advocating for loved ones,
founding vital programs, and empowering families to navigate complex healthcare systems.
I was a Registered Nurse for 35 years in Alberta, retired in 2023.
Worked in a wide range of bedside nursing roles, with the first 24 years focused on adult care in two major hospitals in Edmonton.
Advocated for her own brother, who later died in ICU, and for her parents, both with serious medical conditions. Successfully navigated complex healthcare challenges, securing placement for both parents in the same long-term care facility—a rare achievement.
In 1996, as a founding parent, secured Alberta government funding for an intensive behavioral program for her then 2-year-old son, enabling other Edmonton families to receive similar support for their children.
Mom to an adult son with autism, providing lifelong advocacy and support for his needs.
Volunteered extensively to educate families on navigating healthcare and securing resources, empowering others with the knowledge and support needed to advocate effectively for their loved ones.
Healthcare Advocacy Consultant
I’ve seen so many people suffer needlessly when they don’t know the right questions to ask their doctor or other healthcare practitioners. I’ve seen scared patients cry after their medical professional lacked any bedside manner, and didn’t fully explain what is occurring with their health.
I’ve seen babies get sent to Neonatal Intensive Care because that parents concerns were not listened to. I’ve seen SO much, TOO much within my working for 35 years in health care and within my own family. I KNOW my family would have had different outcomes to various situations, had I not advocated for them and know what to say, who to speak to and when to say NO.
This is my why- not everyone has a former healthcare professional in their court, so I will be your advocate AND teach you how to advocate for yourself.
